We are a group of volunteers seeking to protect, preserve and campaign for Woolwich Common, a large green space in the Royal Borough in Greenwich, London.
Owned by the Ministry of Defence, the land has a rich history, initially owned by the Crown and used as common land for locals before being transferred by an Act of Parliament circa 1800 to the military for artillery practice for the nearby Barracks and Military Academy.
It is currently maintained by the MoD, but largely given over to public use and is a haven for a variety of flora and fauna, including rare acid grassland and areas of wilderness in an otherwise urban environment.
The Friends of Woolwich Common group was set up by local residents at the start of 2019 to protect the Common and pull together stakeholders to look after and promote this wonderful open space.
We are always looking for helpers, whether to volunteer at our events, raise awareness of issues or simply share your pictures of the Common with us!
Contact us through social media, or at friendsofwoolwichcommon@gmail.com.
